The Team
This is us...
Alex Dawkins
I’ve worked in the travel industry ever since I returned from a post-uni backpacking trip in South America. I love to explore off-the-beaten-track places and believe that all travel should be a force for good in local communities; when I joined The Slow Cyclist in 2023, I knew it was a perfect fit.

Having spent a lot of my childhood cycling around the UK and Europe on family holidays, I was very excited to join The Slow Cyclist team and started as a host in the beautiful Côa Valley in Portugal. I'm now a Destination Manager working across our rides in Greece and Armenia, and am here to provide the smoothest and most enjoyable adventures for our guests. Before The Slow Cyclist I was a radio producer, a cook and a gardener in Croatia and recently fulfilled my dream of being a cowgirl in Montana and Mexico.

Before joining The Slow Cyclist, I spent several years living and working abroad, mostly in Canada and Australia. I began on a cowboy ranch in Canada, riding in rodeos and guiding overnight pack trips. For the next three years, I travelled in my van, worked several ski seasons and discovered a passion for mountain biking. Here at The Slow Cyclist I am responsible for the smooth operation of our journeys in Portugal, Romania and Italy. Now based in the UK, I spend most of my free time exploring on two wheels.

I grew up in the south of France, and speak French, Italian and English. But I’m British at heart and moved to Bristol in 2020 to study anthropology and archaeology. Having spent three years learning about the customs, history and cultures that make the world so special, joining The Slow Cyclist as a host in Transylvania felt like a natural next step. Now I am based back in the UK and spend my days ensuring our guests have everything they need to enjoy their time with us in Portugal, Romania and France.

I have spent much of the past decade living and working in Mongolia. I returned home, like many globe trotters, in early 2020 and spent the following year hosting Slow Cyclists in Transylvania. On my return to the UK, I was thrilled to be asked the join the team full -time, and given the opportunity to build experiences for our guests that align with our values. So far I've immersed myself in Turkey's Taurus Mountains and Armenia's northern hinterland, both of which I've fallen for in a big way. If I could be anyone from history I'd be Princess Ada of Caria.

Since my first big solo trip to Everest Base camp in 2013, it sparked a love for exploring the world, learning about new cultures and where possible hiking through beautiful mountain ranges. I have spent most of my life educating young people through the outdoors and leading expeditions to remote parts of the world. Now my love for travel continues at The Slow Cyclist and I am very lucky to spend my days curating trips for guests and ensuring they have the best possible time away with us in India, Turkey and the Basque Country.

I joined The Slow Cyclist in late 2023 having previously worked in practice accountancy for the past 3 years. When I’m not working I enjoy travelling to new places and all things related to sport, cricket and football being my favourites. My dream holiday would be to go to watch cricket in Dharamshala in the mountains of northern India".

My love for English language, literature and culture brought me to the UK from northern Italy in 2018. After three years working in the hospitality industry in Oxford I joined The Slow Cyclist in February 2022. My work is largely in the background, supporting Sally and the Operations team so that we can give our guests the best experience possible. That's always the aim! Away from work I read a lot. Jane Austen is a particular favourite; and I dream of visiting New Zealand one day.
James Frickey
After finishing university I bought a one-way ticket to Australia. A 28,000km road trip followed, inspiring a love for the open road ever since. I spent 18 years working for two leading bespoke travel companies before the chance to join The Slow Cyclist presented itself in late 2022. I now manage the team responsible for ensuring our guests choose the right trip for them, and have a seemless experience before, during and after they travel.

My degree was in Materials Science but my gap year and holidays spent travelling and working in hospitality showed me where my real interest lay. A season in the Alps and travelling in Central America led me to The Slow Cyclist where I loved working as a host in Transylvania. So after three months driving from the UK to Armenia with another Slow Cyclist host I joined the team full-time to design new and exciting journeys for our guests. I've recently travelled and designed trips in Poland, the Spanish Basque Country and southwest France. I'm currently pushing for Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains to be next! I would love to meet David Attenborough.

I have always wanted to blur the line between my passion for cycling and my career. After 4 years coaching mountain biking in the Wye Valley, I've found the perfect balance at The Slow Cyclist. When I'm not sharing the magic of slow cycling as part of our marketing team, you'll find me outdoors, exploring the trails, probably covered in mud.
Laura Hammond
I have always loved to travel, spending years working as a yoga teacher around the world before moving into adventure travel marketing and writing. For a long time, I explored by hiking, surfing, and road trips, but after taking up cycling a few years ago, I fell in love with bikepacking. Joining The Slow Cyclist marketing team has meant I get to combine work with my two favorite things: cycling and travel!

We always hope that our trips have a lasting impact on our guests and for me that was certainly true. After joining a trip to Rwanda in 2018, I decided to switch out of a 25 year career in the legal profession - having lived and worked in the UK, USA and Asia - and join The Slow Cyclist, which I did in August 2019. My role as Chief Operating Officer means I'm responsible for running the business day-to-day and lets me combine my love for travel with my experience of growing global businesses.

I have 20-years’ experience of the bespoke travel market, starting when I founded Original Travel in 2002. I grew OT to a position at the very top of the tailor-made travel industry in the UK, stepping down as CEO in 2020. I remain an Advisory Board Member of Original Travel and hold several other non-Executive positions. I am a keen cyclist and am part of the team who organises the longstanding charity quadrathlon event, the Norfolk Superhero.
Oli Broom
I am the Founder of The Slow Cyclist, and its CEO. I graduated from Durham University in 2003 and after a meandering career taking in chartered surveying, charity work in Rwanda and a stint helping launch the Tour de France in Yorkshire - with a little break in 2009-11 to cycle to Australia - led my first Slow Cyclist journey in Transylvania in 2015. Back then, I was a huge advocate of bicycle travel as a way of engaging with people and the world's wild places. Now, all these years later, I've seen the positive impact a little bicycle touring company like ours can have on communities all around the world, from those who travel with us to our teams on the ground, from the charities we support and the communities whose lives we touch. I know we can do more, and I'm excited about seeing that happen over the coming years. My favourite book is What is the What by Dave Eggers and I'd love to write songs as good as Leonard Cohen, Lou Reed or Bruce Springsteen. Sadly, I never will.
Sally Hoare
I moved back to the UK in 2016 after twelve years living and working in Sydney and Bangkok, tempted home by the prospect of joining Oli and helping to grow The Slow Cyclist. These days I run our operations, working with trusted partners in all our destinations to make sure you have the most amazing time, without any hiccups. I still make sure I host a few trips each year too.
