Activity Level: 3 out of 5
This journey is taken mostly by electric bike with some walking.
For cycling we use front suspension electric mountain bikes as we often cycle off road. Cycles are between 40 – 65 kms on a mix of quiet tarmac roads, gravel roads and paths. The tracks have sections that require good balance due to loose gravel. This is a hilly part of Spain so prepare for steep sections. A good level of cycling fitness and ability to cycle up and downhill off road is required, but we have plenty of time to take things slow.
On foot, walks take 1 – 2 hours. These are straightforward and generally not challenging.

How we work this out
Itinerary
We designed our cycling holiday in northern Spain to be a 5-night immersion of the Basque Country. Below is the itinerary, although it can easily be offered as a 6-night journey too.
Morning cycle 24km – Afternoon cycle 14km
Today we start on the bikes. After negotiating a few climbs and descents along quiet backroads, we start meandering along the River Lea towards the sea towards our final destination, the historic fishing town of Lekeitio. Once we arrive we will have a celebratory drink and a well deserved lunch, before enjoying the beach and swimming in the sea. Late in the afternoon we get back on the bikes one last time to make the short journey along the coast to our guest house, owned by friendly and fascinating hosts.

Walking and Cycling in Spanish Basque Country
Spanish Basque Country is a wonderful and varied area for cycling. Our journey in the Basque is suitable for most levels of cyclist, although some gravel sections can be challenging. Cycling distances are between 40 and 65 kms a day, on a mix of gravel tracks and quiet tarmac backroads, using electric mountain bikes. Occasionally we hop off the bikes for short walks.
Guiding & Support
Our attention to detail sets us apart. On your Basque cycling holiday, you will be accompanied by a Slow Cyclist host. In addition, you will be looked after by two of our local guides throughout. Your bags will be driven ahead each day and a support vehicle will be on hand (although never too close) in case you need a lift.
Accommodation
We avoid big, soulless hotels, preferring intimate Basque guest houses offering charm, comfort and a beautiful location. On this journey, we cycle to a new location each day and stay in a different guest house each night. To help you get a good night’s sleep we provide luxury pillows in addition to those provided by the guest houses.
