Prepare to be wowed by Armenian cuisine. Steeped in tradition, Armenian recipes are rich and hearty, making the most of local, seasonal produce. Capital city Yerevan is the place to sample the best food Armenia has to offer, along with international cuisine and creative fusions.

Our favourite dishes include ghapama (a celebratory stuffed pumpkin that has a song dedicated to it), khash (a tripe soup) and khorovats (Armenian barbecue). But no Armenian meal is complete without lavash, a thin flatbread made in a traditional tandoor oven.

All of these dishes and more can be found in Armenia's capital; here are just some of our favourite restaurants in Yerevan.

Traditional Armenian Restaurants

Tavern Yerevan

If you're looking to try Armenia's most traditional dishes, accompanied by lively music, Tavern Yerevan should be your first port of call. Dishes include khorovats (Armenian barbecue), delicious salads, pilaf and ghapama (stuffed pumpkin).

Lavash

One of the most colourful restaurants in Yerevan, Lavash was built on the principle of 'farm to table' and serves only fresh, high-quality natural products. The menu is varied but best-known for its breakfasts, sweets and, of course, Armenia's ubiquitous flatbread lavash, which you can see being baked in a traditional tandoor.

Dolmama

Dolmama serves a range of traditional Eastern Armenian dishes, revitalising indigenous dishes with a creative twist. Menu highlights include khashlama (meat stewed in wine), Easter pilaf and, of course, dolma.

Dalan Art Gallery and Restaurant Abovyan 12

This open-air cafe, restaurant and tea shop is in the same building as a beautiful gallery, exhibiting the works of contemporary Armenian artists. It's a great spot to enjoy local meats, cheeses, soups and salads accompanied by Armenian wine and brandy.

Innovative Cuisine

Zeituna

Zeituna declares itself the 'Home of Food' and rightly so. Here, Syrian home cooking meets modern Armenian cuisine, all infused with delicious Middle Eastern flavours. Our favourite seats are outside, on the edge of a peaceful park.

Barev Arev

Barev Arev offers an experimental menu of Armenian cuisine with a French-Italian twist. Ingredients are locally grown, and dishes can be washed down with a choice of over 100 Armenian wines.

International Restaurants

Tumanyan Khinkali

This is the place to try khinkali in Yerevan. Originally from neighbouring Georgia, these dumplings are stuffed with a variety of fillings and eaten using the distinctive twisted topknot as a handle. Enjoy with a glass of aromatic Armenian wine.

Sherep

Meaning 'ladle', Sherep serves delicious and unique dishes from a host of different cuisines. Dining here is an experience as you can watch chefs prepare dishes in their large open kitchen. On occasion, Sherep hosts chefs from different countries holding culinary battles called 'Sherepamart' (literally, 'fight on ladles').

Bars

In Vino

Armenia is renowned for its wine and, with so many unique grape varieties, it can be hard to know where to begin. At In Vino, the staff will help you to find a bottle that suits from a choice of 1,300 varieties.

Beatles Pub Yerevan

It may not sound very Armenian, but this quirky bar is where the locals love to hang out. Here you can sample a range of Armenian craft beers or some of their 300+ varieties of whisky. Music is always playing and, yes, more often than not it is The Beatles.
