The Slow Cyclist

Our Difference

For over a decade, Slow Cyclists have been telling us what they love most about travelling with us; and why they keep coming back.

The same things come up again and again: the feeling of unearthing a region's secrets, the pace, the quality of our guides and hosts and being looked after so well from start to finish. We've tried to distil all of that, and more, here; the choices we make, the things we won't compromise on, and the reasons our guests come home feeling the way they do.

1. Small Groups

Our Scheduled Journeys never exceed 12 guests.

That's intimate enough to be invited into someone's home to sit around a farmhouse table, and to stay in the guest house with character rather than the hotel without it. On the road, it means riding together rather than being strung out over miles: safer, more sociable, more fun. Above all, it means you get to know the people you're travelling with and forge friendships that outlast the trip. Of course, private groups can be any size.

2. Distinctive Destinations

We go where others don't think to look.

Transylvania. Rwanda. The lesser-known jungles of central India, the remote mountains of northern Armenia and a tucked-away French wine region. This isn't by accident. We have an urge to travel far from the well-worn trail, to places where the landscape hasn't been smoothed out for tourists and the welcome is all the warmer for it. There are easier ways to work, but the rewards, for our guests and for us, are worth the effort.

3. The Decision Detox

It’s rare in small group travel, but once you're with us, everything is covered.

We hear again and again what a joy it is not to have to reach for your wallet; for that second bottle of wine, or to tip the farmer who showed you around his hilltop village. But the ‘detox’ goes beyond the financial. Slow Cyclists consistently tell us, with some surprise, how little they need to think when they’re with us. The result is a week that is active and stimulating, and yet somehow deeply restful. That, to us, is luxury.

4. Cycling As Travel

We're cycling as travel, not cycling as sport.

We're not anti-lycra, but you certainly don't need any. E-bikes are standard on all our Scheduled Trips, so the focus is on the journey - the villages, the quality of the guiding, the long lazy lunches - and not on whether you can make it up the next hill. Our range of Activity Levels means we're able to something for anyone who loves seeing the world roll by under their wheels, whether they consider themselves a cyclist or not.

5. Our Community

We can’t exactly explain why, but those who choose to travel with us tend to share lots in common.

They are curious, warm, unpretentious, and up for new experiences. Perhaps it’s the pace we set or the values that underpin our journeys, but again and again, guests tell us that their fellow travellers were the unexpected highlight of their trip. We saw this spirit in action at our 10th anniversary party at London’s Royal Geographical Society in 2025. Over 450 Slow Cyclists joined us, which made us feel like we’re building something that matters.

6. The Gold

We plan meticulously, and then we leave room for magic and serendipity.

We call this “the gold.” When Oli, our Founder, cycled around the world, the moments that stayed with him were the ones he didn't see coming: an invitation from a stranger, a view that appeared from nowhere, a conversation that changed how he saw a place. That feeling of not knowing what's around the next corner is one of the great joys of travel, and it's something we've worked hard to build into each Slow Cyclist experience.

7. Guided by Values

We're independent and founder-led.

It means we're able to ensure all decision-making is aligned with our values. They shape how we build every journey — where your money goes, who we work with, and why we'll always choose the family-run trattoria over the hotel restaurant. It means we've directed over £250,000 to local charities over the past decade. It means we measure our success not just in guest satisfaction but in the strength of the communities we are part of around the world. And for our guests, it means you can have confidence that every detail of your trip, from the people you meet to the places you stay, has been chosen with care, for the right reasons.

8. Guides and Hosts

We're incredibly proud of our guides, two of whom lead each of our journeys.

They're not briefed up and flown in. Instead, they're always local, with connections, stories and intimate knowledge that only comes through a life lived somewhere. Many are ecologists, historians, ornithologists. All of them care deeply about our guests. And then there's the hosting. This is not something you'll find on most group trips, but we hear again and again what a difference our hosts make, looking after every detail, bridging language and customs, thinking ahead. Details matter, and it’s our hosts who provide those little touches that make the best travel experiences so memorable.

9. Our Own Trips

We don't sell trips designed by others.

Every experience is created from the ground up over several months, by working collaboratively with local experts and guides who know the back roads, the hidden villages, the manor house that’s been in the same family for 500 years, the doors worth knocking on. And then we refine, year after year, always looking for incremental improvements. In some destinations, we even carry our own luxury pillows. All this means it’s a slower way to do things, but our guests tell us they come home having had an experience they never could have found on their own. We love to hear that.
